tapes 'n tapes lineup change?

[yesterday was full of music happenings. first, i stopped by Universal to check in with the folks over there....all seems well and good although there seems to be a lot of personal turnover at the moment. i will be sure to keep my eye on that. second, i visited the Vamp crew and learned how to update website stuff. next, i headed downtown to help 2024 move into temporary offices in Northeast. after that i headed down to the Varsity where i saw The Stills. thankfully i got in free because the band didn't impress me much. the two lead singer dudes kept bickering onstage and there presence on stage was lacking...so, needless to say i don't think i will be paying much attention to them. ]

*some interesting news*...the local dish on Tapes 'N Tapes is that bassist Shawn Neary is no longer in the band. disputes over some ethical issues apparently broke the band. but don't you worry, Erick Applewick of The Hopefuls and Vicious Vicious has stepped in to replace Shawn. Erick also produced Tapes latest album, The Loon. Sources have yet to confirm whether this is a temporary or permanent lineup change.

Tapes recently played 9 shows at SXSW and have a write up in Rolling Stone's latest issue. they also gave a review of their album - giving it 3.5 stars out of 5.

the sickness overcame me today and progressively got worse as the day and night went on. it wasn't a particularily nice day out either as it was raining for most of the day. i also left two expensive prints that i had bought the day before in the taxi cab that we took into town...so, needless to say the day was not started on the right foot from the get-go...but here is the events that took place nonetheless...

Day 2: SXSW

i was ambitious to think that i would wake up at 830 this morning after being up for nearly 24 hours the day before...needless to say, we all were passed out until like 1130 and didnt get back into the action until 1230. i was kinda bummed because i wanted to see Neil Young speak, but that was soon erased from my regrets as the day went on. here is a list of what went down during DAY 2 of South by...

SXSW

in 2 days! i will be heading down to one of the biggest music conferences and festivals known to music nerds all around the world. that's right, South By South West or SXSW or for uber hipsters you can simply call it South By.

neil and i are leaving early wednesday morning and as soon as we step on the plane it will be non stop rockin. i am looking forward to meeting, listening, networking and hanging with other music kids. it will be action packed...

i will hopefully be updating this blog each day that i am down there March 15-19. that is, if i have time or am not sacrificing sleep time-because i guarentee i will not be sleeping once i land in Austin. i still have to prioritize all the panels, shows, parties, and general hangs that will be going on...if you know of something that should not be passed up, let me know as i am up for anything...

new music

i have been on a new music kick lately and it is not helping my financial situation very much. music is very much like a drug and so hard to stay away once you start. anyway, after pawning off some cds in order to purchase some new ones i have found a few discs worth reporting.

first, a group out of Jacksonville Beach, FL by the name of Electric President has grabbed my attention and still hasn't let go. this duo of young 20 somethings is along the same lines as the Postal Service's of the world while also placing great emphasis on picture perfect singer-songwriter craftsmanship. they have also garnered the stamp of approval from death cab front man Ben Gibbard. they are currently on Morr Music (Berlin, Germany). be sure to check these guys out. track 2 is front - runner as my first fave, titled Insomnia.

next, i finally picked up local indie rock rock outfit, Hockey Night. after reading about these guys this past summer when their latest disc, Keep Guessin', came out - i recently stumbled upon them again and made my way to the record shop. they are a dash of Mason Jennings sounding vocals mixed with The Hopefuls guitar pop and Weezer-esque nerd rock. they have been on tour with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and have made a big splash around the country. they will be performing a few shows at SXSW in a few weeks...

random encounter of the day story:

so, during our lunch break in st louis we stopped in to Vintage Vinyl which is located in the U City Loop. hip little strip located in the Washington college area. anyway, 2 seconds after we walk into the shop - guess who walks in right behind us? that's right. Ghostface Killah! formerly of Wu-Tang fame, i was star struck of course, so Kris and I got a picture with him. we ended up getting an autographed poster and listened to tracks off his new album which is coming out in March. apparently the in-store was also random too, because even the employees didn't know he was coming. he was just in town to do some radio promos for the new record and just happend to be in the area. pretty cool if you ask me. of course, i had to call Lance because he seemed like the only person at the time who would give a shit.

that is my story of the day.

St. Louis: day 1

greetings. i am sitting in the lobby of the clarion hotel waiting to leave on the bus for our first rehearsal.

yesterday, we spent 9 hours driving from Winona to St. Louis. kris and i watched some Scrubs and slept. after we unloaded at the hotel we took off to Hi-Pointe which is a small dive located in the Del Mar area of downtown St. Louis. there, we visited the boys of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin as they were playing that evening at the club. a band from Columbia, MO called Caulfield and the Magic opened with SSLYBY following, then Catfish Haven closing out the night. it was fun to see philip, will, and jon. it was probably the best set that i have seen from them, mostly due to the energy that came out of them on stage, which was probably heightened by the presence of their fill-in bassist, Matt. they even played Anne Elephant as their closer. simply amazing. pictures will be posted when I get home. kris got some pretty awesome pictorals.

Catfish is from the Chicago area and will be playing a couple shows at SXSW. i chatted with them a bit and hope to meet up with them in Austin.

Jeff Hanson @ the Varsity Theater

saint mary's is on winter break right now. i have been hanging out at school for the most part because i am leaving for St. Louis tomorrow morning. but i took a trip back home yesterday and spent the night. it was good to be home. i got to spend some time with the family and anne. i also managed to sneak in a show as well.

after having a delicious dinner at the Loring Pasta Bar, Anne and I headed next door to the Varsity Theater where we met up with Bryan, Neil, and Natalie for the Jeff Hanson and Southerly show. i've only been to the Varsity once before for a Halloween, Alaska show and the place is very beautiful. i think it works well for a full band but the stage is too big for a solo act. this was the case for both Southerly who opened as well as Jeff Hanson.

it was a very intimate crowd. i guess you can't expect much for a freezing Sunday evening. Southerly definitely had the rivers / elliott smith persona going on - an interesting character on stage too. kinda timid and akward but sarcastic and entertaing at the same time. his music kept me interested too.

i was looking forward to seeing Jeff Hanson, as I had seen him last summer at the Nomad and didn't really dig it the first time around but then went out and bought both of his cds. he throws you for a loop the first time you hear him sing because the voice that comes out of this running- back looking guy is a very high - powerful falseto that absolutely blows you away. the guitar rhythms and chord structure laced with beautiful almost breakable melodies on top make for a very impressionable and classic sound that is hard to forget. Jeff is also pretty shy on stage but puts the audience at ease with his quit wit and sarcastic easy going attitude. throughout the show he would ask that there be as little light as possible and then went into a rant about how the lights make him sweat and how once he starts thinking about how he is sweating then he can't stop thinking about how he is the sweaty guy on stage performing in front of an audience. jeff is heading to Japan tomorrow for a series of shows then back home to Minnesota to start recording a new album.

SSLYBY MN visit

so, this is forever and a day old but still worth posting. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin was in MN last week for a couple shows. they happend to have a couple free days in between their tour with Catfish Haven and headed up to Winona and Minneapolis from Chicago for some musical performances. they came back to Winona and played The Green Lantern. i had never been there before but turned out to be a fitting, cozy little dive that made for a very private and personal performance. it couldn't get much better. the place is owned by this guy named Dr. Bob who has his own puppets that he makes and stores in the basement of his house turned coffeehouse/bar venue.

we went out to betty jo's for dinner afterwards then headed back to the village to crash. but not before lincoln played them some of his originals. great time.

the next night we crammed into my van (the millenium falcon) and drove up to Minneapolis where Boris was playing The Nomad. We(bryan, steve, neil, rick, kris) drove up because Bookreader was opening and needed a ride up that could haul equipment. it was an adventure to say the least. The Nomad is another little cozy hang on the west bank of the U of M down the street from the 400 bar. their was a decent crowd out to see the show for a Tuesday night. both bands put on solid shows and made for a memorable night. SSLYBY even pulled out an Arrested Developmet (not the TV show) cover of Mr. Wendal. got to hang out with my family, anne, erin, kimball, kate, and some new people.

we packed up and headed back to Winona cause we all had class in the morning. Boris came back and crashed at the village again. o the life. boris is will, philip, jon, and jonathon.

The Bad Plus

last weekend we had the honor to have The Bad Plus perform on campus. it was quite a treat to sit back and enjoy music of truly talented musicians in the Page Theatre. this group has gained notiriety performing covers of songs by The Pixies, Aphex Twin, Queen, and Nirvana. not to sell them short, their originals are pretty damned good too. the group consists of Dave King on Drums, Ethan Iverson on Piano, and Ian Anderson on Bass. this is nothing short of a alternative jazz trio - for their wall of sound created at times could be mistaken as a full orchestra. even if you are not a jazz impresario you could easily find yourself tapping along to the abnormal but seemingly interesting melodies and chord progressions that come through The Bad Plus. the groups chemistry and energy on stage is a sight to see as well, and truly defines a tight-knit group of players.

their most recent record, Suspicious Activity?, has gained some considerable attention and recieved 4 stars in Rolling Stone. they have been touring in support of this release all over the world and Saint Mary's was lucky enough to catch them on their way through. while here, they played tracks from their latest album as well as a few oldies and goodies. the set-list included:

Interview with Motion City Soundtrack

Motion City Soundtrack, who are about to embark on a six week nation wide headlinng tour, rocked the gym at St. Marys on January 28th. Almost 2000 people attended the show and it was a great success. Before they took the stage, Guitarist Josh Cain and Bassist Matt Taylor stopped by the KSMR radio station for an interview with Neil Olstad and Matt Perkins[your narrator].

Neil Olstad-You guys had a huge year in 2005. What was one moment that just made you say "Wow."

Matt Taylor-Warped Tour. In Chicago we were the last band to play that night, we were scared nobody would stay. We were thinking there would be just a handful of people, but everybody stuck around and it was amazing.

N.O.-I can’t imagine doing that everyday, with the heat and the sun, what is it like doing the entire warped tour?

Josh Cain- Its nice because of the thirty minute sets, you are on and off stage. It sucks because it seems like you are touring around the country, its totally different from touring clubs, you never go to the cities, you never see anything, you eat catering everyday and forget what its like to have different food.

N.O.-What would you say is the biggest difference between the new record Commit This To Memory, and your last release I Am the Movie?

J.C.-They have different titles. (laughs)

M.T.-We went into this one with a little more time and budget, we wanted it to sound bigger. We wanted to make a big sounding rock record.

J.C.-We didn’t have the capabilities originally. I Am the Movie was recorded before we signed to Epitaph, and we didn’t spend much money on it. This time we wrote songs we knew were going to be on a record.

M.T.-This time was the first record where we all contributed to the writing.

Matt Perkins-Did you have any trouble with the record label as far as what songs went on the record?

J.C.-Epitaph is very band friendly. We are our biggest critics, before anybody else tells us we cant put a song on a record, its probably ourselves.

N.O.-What would you say is the overall theme to Commit This To Memory?

J.C.-Justin (lead singer/guitarist) has a knack of forgetting things, and there are a lot of references to memory on the record. The theme of ‘all you are are memories.'

N.O.-What were some of your favorite albums that came out last year?

J.C.- I really liked the new Death Cab album

M.T.-Me too.

N.O.-Do you think you listen to more or less music when you are out touring?

J.C.-When we used to drive the van, we would listen to a ton of music.

M.T.-Now that we are in the bus, we just sleep when we are rolling, then we wake up at the club and kinda hang out.

J.C.-Yeah, there’s not as much downtime anymore.

N.O.-So it’s TOTALLY different touring in a van from touring in a bus?

J.C.- A WORLD of difference. In the van you have all this time to kill, in the bus there’s no time to kill. It’s a normal day, you go to bed in your bed, and you wake up in the next city. It’s very weird.

N.O.-If money and reason was no object, what band would you like to share a bill with for a tour? Build your own tour.

J.C.-The Pixies and Ben Folds

M.T.-I would bring back the Refused.

J.C.-I bet you every refused fan likes the Pixies.

N.O.-What do you guys think about file sharing?

M.T.-I was taught that it’s always nice to share.

J.C.-We wouldn’t be where we are without file-sharing. We wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without file sharing, we wouldn’t have gotten signed, and we wouldn’t have done any of this stuff we've done without it. We know its going to happen, there’s nothing we can do about it. I’m not gonna get mad at somebody for doing it. But with our next record we are going to be more tight about it. Because our last record got out months ahead of time and I think it affected our initial hit. I mean it was great, but it could have been better.

N.O. -The band just had two huge performance on TV, first on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the next on Jimmy Kimmel Live, what is it like to play shows like that?

J.C.- It was a lot of fun, we got to meet celebrities and stuff. The bigger we get we start to realize that these people that you put up on pedestals are just normal people. The interesting thing was with our performance on Conan, was that while we were performing, the pro tools computer crashed, so we had to do it again afterwards without the audience there, so what you saw on that show was actually two performances edited together.

M.T.-We were really happy with the first performance and then they were like "hey guys you gotta do it again!"

N.O.- You spent most of 2005 touring, what can we look forward to in 2006 from the band?

M.T.- Touring!

J.C.- Headline tour this spring, then we are doing the MTV Campus Invasion tour with Hellogoodbye and Straylight Run, off to Japan and Australia later in the spring, then finally doing the entire Warped Tour this summer. Maybe in August we will have some free time. It’s weird when your whole year is planned out for you.

M.T.-I kinda like it.

Winona's wake up call

this is a very late summation of the events that took place the weekend of January 27th. nonetheless, i will still blog about it anyway.

friday, jan 27-we had local hip hoppers, Heiruspecs, play the Page Theatre. talk about exciting. i had their album, Tiger Dancing, but was never able to catch their live show until now. and trust me, it is well worth it. this group of talented highschool buddies truly know how to put on a great live show. the crowd ate it up too, and made for a really fun night. all the dudes in the band were super nice and i cannot wait to check them out again this summer.

saturday, jan 28-this was a rude awakening. i woke up at 7am to begin the long day ahead of me. this long day consisted of everything involved in putting on a rock show for 1800 kids. it was the beginning of setting of the sound and lighting production for the Motion City Soundtrack cpmcert taking place in Saint Mary's very own gymnasium. talk about sexy. it was a pretty cool experience to put on a show of this size. there is soo much stuff that you have to think about when planning and organizing a concert. i found it quite fun and enjoyable. we got the sound loaded up around 1230.

The Motion City Soundtrack crew came around 130 (not the band) and loaded in. the band got there around 230-3 to sound check. it was pretty cool to have the gym pretty much empty and know that close to 2,000 people would be in there later. the band was really nice and we had the chance to interview a couple of them for the Cardinal Newspaper. myself and the fraternity were security for the night which was interesting as always. i was located in the front in between the stage and crowd and let's just say the production company had a POS barrier that couldn't stop a 2 year old from rush the stage if they wanted. it was like a crappy welded carnival barrier that did absolutely nothing in holding the shifting crowd back. it was still an adventure carrying people over from crowd surfing and figuring out a way to brace the barrier with the stage. Small Towns Burn a Little Slower opened and put on a decent show.

MCS played a rocking show and I managed to snap a few pics and enjoy the music while working security. the band was really nice and mingled with the crowd after the show. i don't really have much more to say about that. i'm just glad it is over and went off without a hitch.

Vicious Vicious @ The Pause

so let's try this again. this would have been up this morning but my computer decided to crash before i could save and post. bryan, neil, and I made our way to St. Olaf Friday night. Vicious Vicious and Coach Said Not To were playing at The Lion's Pause. let's discuss Olaf's venue for a moment which is located in their student union. this student union is not your typical college hangout for it seems like you are in a convention center or downtown skyskraper. i just about fell over walking around inside because everything is so nice and should not be on a college campus in Northfield. the Lion's Pause which is a student run night club on campus is probably one of Minnesota's best kept secrets as far as music venues go. having only been built in the mid 90's this place floored me. had i know about this on campus venue, it just may have been my deciding factor when it came to deciding where to attend college. picture the triple rock social club mixed with the quest's main room and you have the Lion's Pause.

enough about that. we drove two hours to check out two notable bands in the MN music scene; Vicious Vicious and Coach Said Not To. Having never seen or listened to much of either bands before - I had no preconcieved notions going into the show. Coach Said Not To opened the show and caught my attention right away. In a way this four piece lady rock outfit reminded me of a dream. a dream in the sense that it starts out the same way but slowly progresses into something that you will remember when you wake up the next day to tell all your friends about. with a typical setup of drum, guitar, bass, and keys, Coach throws out any preminitions you may have about the all female indie rock gimmick. their sweeping melodies and harmonies flow so well over truly catchy guitar and key riffs. think of Eisley taken to the next level of musicianship and you will begin to know Coach. i could have watched the drummer and lead singer all night. the drummer having a weird similarity to that of my sister kris. and the lead singer with her funky dancing who could easily make a sizable side income teaching dance. Coach Said Not To is definitely a dream i will remember and tell all of my friends about.

a familiar feeling came over me when Vicious Vicious stepped on stage. maybe because I had seen 3 of the 4 members before playing in different bands and around town at different venues. Erick Applewick-lead(hopefuls), Heath Henjum-bass(hopefuls), Martin Dosh-Rhodes(Dosh, Redstart...), and drummer guy. looking in from the outside it looks like a typical setup but after hearing a few songs you realize this group has a very distinct character. a blend of power pop rock mixed with some laid back soul and R&B makes for a ferocious sound. the band's name is misleading in a sense because the only thing Vicious about them is their sound that sucks you in with their danceable guitar hooks and friendly vocals. it's hard not to think this group isn't the latest national indie buzz band. thank god they are local.

in an attempt to be like all the other music blogs on the world wide web, i am going to try and focus this blog more towards music news, show reviews, and anything else related to the music business...now, this may be kinda hard living in secluded Winona, MN at the moment-but hopefully i will come up with some quality material.

Last weekend i went down to one of the only music venues in Winona called Rascals. a hole in the wall joint that i hate going to to, but have no other option when I want to check out some of the live music acts that play their. don't ask me why they would want to play there in the first place. anyways, steine, jules, kels, and i went down their last weekend to check out Musab of the Rhymesayers Entertainment crew. a local squad and Unknown Prophets opened for Musab. a decent turnout for Winona-not a huge underground hip hop scene going on. Unknown Prophets played a solid set which setup Musab really well. Musab, being one of the originals on the Rhymesayers bill, I was kinda excited to check out the show. even with the songs having the same setup over and over again and some tech problems- it was still a strong set. he even did B.L.A.C.K Culture which featured Slug on his album Comparison when he used to go by the name Beyond on one of Rhymesayers first releases.

it has been an eventful wrap to the last week of summer. i headed down to the 400 bar with anne on friday to check out The Hopefuls show. it is a cozy little bar/venue that is a great place to see your favorite artists up close. i recomend taking a listen to these guys, because i guarantee you will enjoy.

on sunday i worked at interlachen. it wasn't your typical wedding reception or lame member party, but in fact it was quite amusing and entertaining. mostly because it was like a who's who of Minnesota and beyond. their were some notable guests in attendance:

its the end of summer blues. yeah. things are coming to an end. new things are beginning. the cycle begins once again. beginning summer goals and accomplishments pushed under the rug because of lack of time or dedication and another summer passes. this has been a very productive summer and i do not regret anything that happend or did not happen this summer. other than maybe some more time to be with friends, practice hobbies, or catch up on sleep. these past few months have been very memorable and eventful.

ryan and bryan came back from seattle early august for a couple weeks. they left on Wednesday to embark on their new life in Vermont. Ryan will be attending law school at the university and Bryan plans to attend school and pursue doctoral duties? i'm sorry. haha. but, both of them will be missed and i hope they come back to visit or that i get the chance to visit them soon. maybe check out the slopes or their barn, who knows?

i had a wonderful belated graduation dinner with annabelle last night at Cafe Lurcat. it was a damn good meal and a great atmosphere. it is located off of hennepin and next to Loring Park. i realized half way through that we were sitting right behind none other than Saint Mary's former President Bro. Louis. gentleman, if you want to treat your lady right-i recomend this joint.

it is time now for me to start cleaning and organizing. i have let my room go to shit this summer. no time.

but tonight is also the Uptown Bar Crawl. which promises to be a joyous time of drunken stuper. so i must get ready for that too.

also, go check out this local show tomorrow night at the 400 bar. cheap cover, great music. what more can you ask for?

last friday i was given the opportunity to help setup an artist acoustic performance and meet and greet at Universal. The band was Ra and it was a rockin time. they played a few new songs including a Police cover and also their old single "Do you call my name" which i requested. thank you very much. Ra is a bunch of chill, laid back rockers and were very cool dudes to talk to. this blog is lame. my leg hurts.

last night i had the opportunity to see Chuck Klosterman speak at Barnes and Noble - Galleria. he is quite an entertaining guy to watch speak. he is very excentric and nervous like-but not at all at the same time. i guess you get used to it after ten minutes or so. anyway, he spoke about and read from his new book killing yourself to live : 85% of a true story. i have only read his book - Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs-but am intrigued to read his latest memoir. i think i like him for the way he writes his books. very conversational and easy to follow. a quick read too. he is worth checking out-if you are a casual reader like myself, or if you are into pop culture, music, girls, drugs, err. basically anything that a college aged- young adult may be into.

after the barnes and noble gig, anne and i headed down to uptown. i had to pawn off some cd's that i have accumulated this summer, as well as check out a few new bars and clubs. we checked out the uptown as well as figlio. figlio has some great deals from 10pm-12am weekdays and all day sundays. $2 for taps, wine, appetizers. cool atmosphere too. take your friend or maybe two.

i went down to the jungle theater with kris and anne tonight to see Tim Root in the Narrator. it wa only an hour long and worth every last penny i paid to get in. it suprised me how funny it was and how entertained i was by the whole thing. so witty, dark, clever! unasumingly great for what it was!!! basically just laughing at Tim in his prime made it all worthwhile. i was told to now go write a review and let the rest of the Fringe Family in on a little secret here in the Twin Cities called Tim Root. quite possibly the funniest man to come out of Saint Mary's since Brother Louis. we should have stayed around to do the whole congrats thing afterwords - but o well. good job timmy. give me a ring. if you havn't seen it yet-there are still 2 shows this weekend!

where the hell did the summer go? that is my question to myself and everyone else who thinks so too. 2 weeks left and i will be hitting the books again, err, my bed to rest from this busy busy summer. although, i am one of those people who needs to be doing something or involved with something otherwise i get bored easily. it is good to keep busy, but not to the point where you are walking around like a zombie because you are getting no sleep and cannot get any of your work done. for example, i should be writing my journals for my internships this summer and turning them in, but instead i choose to bitch about not having any time to do anything.

i got it, maybe lack of time isnt just it, but rather a lack of prioritizing the most important things to get done. or maybe i want to put the least amount of effort into something and feel like i am accomplishing a lot by writing in this silly blog to the masses and keeping everyone updated on my lame life.

St Mary's Music Newz: Eisley Will NOT be joining us this fall for an extraordinary concert. management claims bad timing and routing, but i say poo ion that. my hopes and dreams we already sunk into that show. o well

so the first DJ show went off without a hitch and it was a very fun experience. i wasnt really sure what to expect but i would do it all over again. the show took place at Betsy's Back Porch Coffee Shop in Minneapolis on Thursday and I played for 3 hours - mainly just some soul, funk, hip hop and classic rock, with a few new ones for fun. thanks to all who came out to support. i know it was uneventful but it was a fun way to get friends together. i have to also say thanks to SAC and Katie for loaning the beautiful Mackies for the sound. i love Mary's! hehe.

this blog almost seems like more of a chore than something fun to do. but i keep doing it anyway.

i made it home safely fomr anderson co., TN last weekend. i had so much fun and it was a good break from everything that was going on at home i.e. work, work work. it was another successful trip thanks to all the people that went: karissa, momo, jonny, annie, becky, katie, erin, kris, and kent. it was truly a memorable experience and one that i would not want to replace. i cannot wait for next year!

We worked on a house for a man named Herbert. He was a very nice man and we were fortunate to meet him and be able to fix his home. We ripped apart his bedroom and put in new studs, insulation, sheetrock and painted. on the outside, a few of us tackled fixing a sinking roof and old rafters. it was a great learning experience for everyone involved and we made it through even with all of our lack of construction experience. it is always a nice wake up call to remember how lucky we all truly are. it amazes me how people in the united states live like people in 3rd world countries.

it was fun to see all the wonderful people from texas again. i always look forward to seeing them every summer to catch up and hang out.

i got a chance to read a good book while i was gone - which i recomend to everyone. it is called Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman. if you like books on pop culture and life in general you will like this book. Chuck is also a Senior Writer at Spin. he is going to be speaking at the Barnes and Noble at the Galleria in Edina on Tuesday, August 9 at 730pm if anyone is interested too!!

what an incredible show! o man. it was 3.5 hours to begin with-non stop music and beats and like 20 artists at any given time on stage. not to mention the breakdancer and indian pow wow breakdowns in between sets. i can honestly say i was not bored once-however hot and sweaty i was from the sold out crowd did not matter whatsoever. neil joined along for the ride-and his comments can relate. this show probably rates in my top 5 all time concerts attended. i cannot even describe the energy that kept on pouring out for over 3 hours. simply amazing.

keep your eyes peeled for P.O.S. -that dude has a sweet sound and some killer beats and rhymes. i love you all - have a goodnight.

it is hard to recall things that have happend recently. although, it seems like all i have been doing is working, eating, sleeping-over and over again. i have managed to do a few things. i got a chance to see a lot of brothers last weekend. first, at the hennepin block party (rick, tim, chuck, daulby, kelly) then, the following night at casey's place in st. paul for his grad party. you can look for yourself below. tj and jess showed up later.

i enjoyed a really fun evening with anne, greta, paul, megan, and oosh at Chino Latino on monday. it was a kinda going away party for greta who is working at Mayo as an RN. i probably had one to many dead nazis that night but it was fun. apparently lindsey lohan has been spotted there a few times since she has been in town. no luck that night. we were all on lookout. but, if you should ever go there-wait until 1030 when the deals kick in. great drink specials and food for cheap!!!

i went down to winona with bryan the other night to visit with the lovely kids who decided to stay on campus this summer. danny, linc, clem, rail, jenk, brig, katie-it was fun to hang out and catch up with everyone.

apparently my blog is lame and all i do is talk about music crap according to clementz-i cannot deny any part of that statement. thanks john.

did you know: the george foreman grille cooks/makes amazing chicken quesadillas. the greatest new snack i tell you.

hello blogger community and loyal fans. i have not been very good at keeping this thing updated. mainly at week-long chunks at a time.

i have been keeping busy with the usual three jobs this summer: vamp, universal, and of course the beautiful interlachen country club. i got to help out at the Teen People Rock 'n Shop Tour at the MOA last weekend. while there, i was catering to Brie Larson's every last whim and desire. i can't wait until she blows up like Lohan. last weekend also included a garage sale that i and other college buddies got together to raise money for our mission trip to Anderson County-Tennessee, in the last week of July. we raised a considerable amount of money to help pay for our 15-passenger van that we our renting. it was a lot of work-but it did pay off.

the 4th and all its glory has come to an end. along with many things in life, things change. thus, this was the first year i really felt no special importance for this usually eventful weekend. it seemed like any other weekend. maybe thats because i spent 3/4 of it working at the lovely ICC. that could put a damper on the mood. nonetheless, it was pretty laid back and typical of the previous weekends this summer.

it was nice though to have the extended weekend. i got to spend some quality time with annie. :) we saw chelsea and ryan and hung out with them which was fun. i got acquainted with my new hobby as a dj. and i came up with a decent dj name too-DJ Back Pain. i think it fits perfectly. if you think differently, then maybe you should drop a post for a new suggestion. blake, dan, and liz had an open house Sunday-with free beer-so that's always good.

it is so hard to think back on what i did over the past couple of days. i bought some more records to add to my collection: common, atmosphere, bob marley-all vinyl mind you. muisc is an addiction and gets you no where in life other than the poor house! although, i did manage to sell some of the records i picked up for free at Universal on Ebay today which made my day. it's all about the loopholes.

so. where did we leave off? much has happend since i last blogged, so i think the best and most efficient way to do this is to just make a list. because it is not that important to dwell on or ramble about anyways.

1. I met Xavier Rudd and had a nice talk with him at Universal. also met his cute little boy.
2. I saw a very good performance by Eisley with Lance at the Ascot room.
3. After Eisley we met up with Anne, Greta, Chels, Paul, Ryan, Emily, and Darrin at Houlihans.
4. I decided I am going to become a DJ-with turntables and everything. if you know any gigs that i could work-let me know *house parties, coffee shops, cafes, random hangouts* or if you or anyone you know is getting rid of any vinyl-free or cheap!
5. I floated down minnehaha creek with my sisters and dad on fathers day. so fun. you should try it sometime. way better than apple river and free!
6. i read that lindsay lohan is talking about going to st. mary's. enough said. no need to dwell.
7. i saw a cool local band at the fine line friday: Hydrophonics. with some peoples from interlachen-dave, suzey, hope, james, mark.
8. Waited in line outside Fifth Element Saturday AM to get tickets to the Ten Year Anniversary Rhymsayers show at First Ave. which will be amazing by the way. and who can complain about the $10 price of the ticket. ?

If you need anything i recommend you go through these places first. free shit! cool shit! random shit! shit! you will find yourself staring blankly for hours in ahhh of the wonders and powers that these 2 sites hold. i mean-how can you go wrong when Free Market is devoted to giving away stuff at the price of you going to pick it up. seriously-check it out.

next order of business. i get to meet Xavier Rudd tomorrow at Universal. which i am super pumped about. you all should get to know him-he just put out a new album titled Solace. ladies will love his sexy aussie body and accent!

i will be joined by mr. lance thompson tomorrow evening. we are going to hit up the Eisley Show in the Ascot Room at the Quest. this is going to be another amazing experience. the concert that is-Lance is always amazing :) lance will probably cream himself when we are standing 5 feet in front of the Ladies of Eisley at the show. apparently he took the poster that i gave him from the radio station and hung it on his ceiling above his bed. i think we know what his motives are for the show. so that is that.

it has been too long! i am starting to have withdrawl. o man, that is not a good feeling. i'll try and begin where i left off. so here it goes:

the Annabelle Graduation Weekend recap-almost 1 week later!
it was an event alright. the o'neals don't mess around when it comes to special occasions. the ride there was fun-as much as it can be. we met up with sally, jonothon, and peter in Wasau and had a fun kid ride while the moms chatted away in their own vehicle. i decided to take us all on a tour of Racine, WI. apparently i did not know where i was going-go figure? an adventure none the less-it was fun to catch up on childhood memories...um?

we all arrived and by all i mean-the landrud's (including USH?), jim's mom and dad, mi familia-kathy, libbles 2007, and kokopip-dave was working. so it was a party. we went to Lombardis that night and had way too much food-but it was delicious none the less. mm mm good! we continued the party to the REC center where we were all entertained by Anne's dad, Jim-and his very good dance skills. I should post the video. it was a sight to see. after the parents went to bed-we headed downtown to the Nickel and the Fly. let's just say that 9 am wake up call came way too soon.

It turned out to be a nice day for Sunday's graduation -good thing, since it was outside. anne did a wonderful job of walking across the stage. Congradulations Annabelle! you are going to do amazing things. good luck at St. Thomas!

the whole weekend seemed so surreal. i wasn't even graduating but it just seems weird that i won't be going back to visit anne there anymore. kind of makes me sad to graduate next year-but that is life. on to the next chapter.

a whirlwind weekend that will not be forgotten. i had so much fun and want to do it all over again.

well, we are about 20 minutes from departing and heading out to appleton for anne's graduation. i am so excited and think it will be a very fun time for all.

i had an unexpected conversation yesterday at Davanni's in Uptown with a man named Mike Patrick. We start talking and end up having a 45 minute long conversation about stories in his life. No wonder he makes a living out of it. I was blown away by what Mike had to say and it turns out that in my senior year of high school he came to Kennedy to speak. I thought he looked familiar, but what a small world. I encourage everyone to check out his website and go hear him speak sometime-it will give you a whole new perspective on your life. it was probably the greatest random conversation that i have had yet.

things are well otherwise and can't wait for anne to be home for the summer. hope all is well

this blog is becoming more sporadic and less interesting. im not going to front. but hopefully there are still those dedicated few who are entertained by my non-sense. i have been busy with work these past few days and find myself stuck inside on the beautiful days. in a way i miss working outside at miller, but then again i don't. i just want some sun. o well. im starting to get worn out juggling two internships and interlachen. i still have to finish paper work so i can get credit for school for the internships. never ending work. but it keeps me busy and i enjoy it for the most part.

i tell myself i should workout but then i find myself eating chipotle 5 times a week. o, it's so good. got to add to the love handles :) maybe i will go biking down by the river before work tomorrow. but that means i will have to wake up at 7am. i can barely wake up at 10am as it is. the motivation is lacking. i need some pills.

i am continuing to try and find some decent bands to play at school next year. i talked with the booking agent for The Bad Plus this afternoon and that looks promising. Also, i have been in contact with Atmosphere, Moving Units, Hot Hot Heat, Iron and Wine, VHS or BETA, and The Bravery. So, hopefully something good comes out of this and we get some good music down at the wonderful supressed catholic school i go to.

I just found out today at Universal that Xavier Rudd will be stopping by the offices next Friday to visit the branch. He is coming to town for his show with Government Mule at the Minnesota Zoo. He is coming in for a meet and greet luncheon, which is quite exciting. Kris is jeolus. i will have to take a picture with him for you. He is like a mix between Bob Marley, Ben Harper, and Jack Johnson mixed all together. He is from Australia too.

2 more days until i get to see my annabelle! i have been looking forward to this weekend for a while now. my fam and i are headed over to appleton saturday morning for anne's graduation celebration. it should be a lot of fun! sally has quite the dinner planned at Lombardi's Steakhouse and then we will hit the town afterwords. i cannot wait to be with my annie baby. it is about time she got done with school. haha.

it does not seem like i have been out of school almost 1 month now-where does the time go? however, i am looking forward to seeing anne this weekend in appleton. she will be a college graduate from Lawrence University and that also seems like a very weird idea. it has been too long since i last saw her and i cannot wait to be with her! i may have to pounce. heh.

the summer is picking up with things to do and not enough time. i am getting heavily involved with things going on at Vamp which is exciting but very time consuming. i think i may have to cut ties with skywynd operations too because i just don't have enough time. yeah. bottom line, no time. o man. okay. well, this blog is going nowhere quickly so i propose this:

i can say i did my good deed tonight. as kha, shane and i were wrapping up the night, i was driving kha back to his house and on our way we drive past this guy getting kicked and beat up on the side of the street by 2 other dudes. me, wondering if i should stop, yell out the window, or jump in the fight- decide to stop and yell at these fucks for beating up this guy. i've never seen anything like this before. before i had time to think i was out of the car along with Shane and Kha and were confronting these assholes. apparently, the guy getting his ass kicked had grabbed this guys cock at some party they were at-so the dude takes him on the street and kicks the shit out of him and calls him names like fag-gay-what have you. i couldn't believe what the hell i was hearing and seeing right before my eyes. i start yelling at the kid and ask him if he is homophobic and this and that...we exchange some words and this goes on for a while and then his buddy and him take off pissed cause they couldn't kick this guy in his face anymore.

when this guy got off the ground, i almost couln't look at him. the best way to describe him is Sloth from the Goonies. i mean, that's sad but that's what he looked like after getting kicked in the face and what not. eyes all puffed and swollen with cut all over his face. it was ridiculous. this guy had to be wasted though because he continued to yell at these dudes who just kicked his ass. either he really liked it or he is just really stupid.

good thing shane and kha were there otherwise i don't know if i would have had the balls to confront three other guys like that. it was a total surreal experience. i felt like i was ryan in the first season of The OC. funny thing is we had just got done watching that show. who would have thought i would ever compare my life to The OC? another prime example of the lameness in my life. o the memories keep a coming. hope everyone else had a safe night.

it has been a while since i have posted. no need to fear, i have not lost interest in the blog-believe me! i just got busy with the summer now. it feels like i am behind but i know i am not. i don't like that feeling because it reminds me of school. ugh.

anyway, it seems like this is becoming a trend but i had another bonfire last night. it was a lot of fun. who can go wrong with a fire, beer, and freinds. i mean-it is a winning situation all around. a lot of people ended up coming including Ryan and Bryan! no WAY! shane, blake, jasmine, mandy, bryan, abby, un sara, kha, tristan, alex, andrew, my lovely sister, some randoms who think they are still in high school, and who can forget the Bloomington Police. two (nothing better to do with their time) police officers decided to come break up the party around 130am. noise complaints?! o well, the fire was dying down anyway.

ryan took off for Seattle this evening with Bryan for the summer. i was glad he made it over last night because he won't be back until August. have fun!

i started my official first day at Universal Music and Video Distribution today. i can already tell it is going to be a totally different experience form Vamp. for one, i brought home a box full of awesome cds-40 or so? it was like christmas in June! it will add to my music addiction. but the whole summer will be like this because Universal is moving their offices to a different location, so a lot of people are getting rid of extra crap that they don't need, which means free SWAG SWAG SWAG!!! gotta love the freebies!

so. i have some ketchup to do. ha. there i go again with the lameness. so, yesterday was an adventure to say the least. first off i got to see anne's (somewhat of a suprise) new car. which is exciting! it is a Suburu Outback. it is a cool car-functional. it's got to be functional. ahaha. then i went to work where i worked a wedding reception at Interlachen where it was another episode of the young and the beautiful. it all comes down to money, no joke. they had a cool idea though and had a photo booth setup for guests to leave in an album-which was fun.

as soon as i got off work, i met up with my buddy Kha who lives down by the U. we chilled and had some Premium Grainbelt-which, by the way is my new favorite beer. not only is it cheap, it is made here in Minneapolis. lovely. so we drank some beers and watched Ali G-also, a very hilarious and quality show. Tore and Tristan came over too. we left Kha's around midnight and headed downtown to Drink. traffic sucked and we ended up paying $10 for parking. o well. this was my first bar experience downtown. so we continued to head to Drink. so get this. we get to the door and we all get in except Tristan. if anyone knows this kid-it makes this situation that much more funny. anyways, the bouncer won't let him in the club because he is dressed inappropriately. whatever that means.

so, he leaves and Tore, Kha, and I decide to stay and have some $5 beers. ridiculous. RANDOM ENCOUNTER OF THE NIGHT: Carolyn Korchik and Hannah Schmeig. go Kennedy. ahaha. so, Drink was lame and we left to go to another lame bar: Brothers. i like the one in Winona better. we got there around 130am and chilled for a while. Kha and i got a beer at like 150am. Newcastle. now, 2 o'clock rolls around and all the bouncer's are starting to kick people out. they are being total asshole's. anyway, they come around and tell us to leave and go away. 5 minutes later they come back and are like finish your beer you have to go. it is like 2:05am. you would think they would let people chill out until like 220-230. so i decide to get in this guys face. i just bought this beer and i was not about to chug it( i had to anyway). i decided to go off and tell him how he had no place to sell people drinks right up until close because if you plan on kicking them out at 2, they have no time to finish. things get a little heated and by this time another bouncer joins his buddy and he is going off on me. im pissed but try to stay rationale but it just didnt make sense to me how they can be so rude like that. they don't give a fuck. meanwhile, i'm rude for wanting to finish my beer that i payed $5 for! to make a long story short i exchanged some words between the two bouncers, chugged my beer, gave them glaring stares of intimidation, and left. i'm not the most threatening person in the world or that strong but these guys were short stalky dudes, and in my state i'm sure i could have put up a good fight. ok. enough.

downtown sucked, but i was drunk and didnt care. i had a good time with kha and tore. we went back to kha's place where i proceeded to pass out on his reclining chair and didn't wake up until noon this morning.

so i drove home and went back to bed. i did nothing today until i had to cut the grass. i am a damn good lawn mower. straight lines and all. then we started a bonfire. tristan, jasmine, and un sara all came over too. along with our new neighbors joe and molly. they are a really nice couple who just moved in last fall and graduated from Hamline not too long ago.

dad ripped open a pack of fireworks and it was a party. grilled some dogs and smores. tis the season. now i smell like fire and am chillin with sara-waiting for ryan and bryan to come over.

so i just got back from bum fuck Farmington on an adventure with kris. we went to go check out Hometown Zeros/HTZ play in their buddies garage who is on leave from duty in Iraq. so it was a rockin party nontheless. we got to see Neil rockin the drums and Dan the bassman.

the show was pretty decent for what it was worth. i mean it was super grassroots local indie punk rock style %100. but that's the way you gotta do it. this garage was prolly the biggest venue in all of Farmington. at least it gave the kids something constructive to do rather than think about what town they live in. joke. no, but it was a good show. i could totally see them on Warped Tour in like 2 years. seriously. these guys don't mess around. they just recorded their second album too, so keep your eyes and ears to the ground for more info.

I don't even know where to begin. the day started out like no other: Interlachen country club. lovely. it slowly go tmore interesting as the day and night went on. i left ICC at around 1230 and met up with Craig at Twin Town guitars. pretty rad guitar/amp/music/studio indie shop on 34th and Lyndale. we picked up and loaded the backline into my van and brought it down to first ave for the show.

my next stop was to meet up with the lovely gretchen, whom i had never met before, but had heard a lot of wonderful things about her. i met up with her at her cozy little pad in the wharehouse district and packed up some things for a pre-party at a swanky little loft on 3rd st. while gretchen set-up for that, i ran some errands and finished up everything we needed for the party.

imagine this: it is your first day of school and you know no one. okay. that is how i felt at this little "who's who social" at this loft in minneapolis. so, i had a summit and was on my way 30 minutes after i got there. an experience none the less.

as i look back on the day, there was a lot of killing of time. so, after this social i went downstairs to Harvey's and had a Newcastle to kill some time. the bill for the show was at 7, but the show didn't go on until 8 or so. i arrived at first ave, and was lucky enough to be on the guest list because Vamp was one of the sponsors of the show, and Kate (co-owner) was also in charge of running and planning a majority of the show.

This show was quite memorable. mix rock and fashion and you are bound for success. there were over 30 local fahion designers. 8 local bands. a bunch of other local peeps, and a soldout show! in only its second year in existence! quite awesome. so, i proceeded to have a number of drinks and watch sweet local bands like the melodious owls, olympic hopefuls, the tv sound, the soviettes, mike gunther and his restless souls, ouija radio, the deaths, and the violettes. on top of that were beautiful men and women prancing around a runway-something i could never imagine myself doing but these people were quite decent at.

the fashion pieces itself were quite interesting. i mean, what do you expect or think of when you see or go to a fashion show. a lot of it was crazy and outgoing, but there was some outfits that i could see people wearing on a day to day basis. anywho, enough of that.

it was a good day for local rock and fashion and a lot of people came out to support that, which is even better. i'm sure i left out a whole bunch of crap but you all don't really care, for i am just rambling on and this is getting too long.

you gotta make the moment last. that's exactly my thoughts too. this whole summer seems surreal in a way. and kinda overwhelming. and it doesn't feel like i am a kid anymore. this is the real world and i am quickly getting myself into that and everything that comes along.

i met last night with michael from skywynd down at Mancini's in St Paul. erin was there too. it was an interview of sorts to start doing odds and ends for the band. let's just say i was glad i was not there alone, otherwise i would have felt like i was in a crazy whacked out dream. but hey, i got a few beers and a shot of tequila and lets just say the deal was sealed-as far as helping the band goes.

i think i am going to split my time between Vamp and Universal too. i just think that i will be regreting this opportunity later if i don't at least check it out. so that is that.

if anyone has a free night tomorrw go and check out Voltage Fashion Amplified at First Ave! it is the cheapest ticket in town ($8)!!! go go go!

so, i watched the final episode of the OC. wow. that is all i have to say. now i have to wait all summer to see what happens! o the pain and agony@!!!

so i got my first real experience of how music business in the twin cities goes down this morning. i was forutnate enough to sit in on a meeting in regards to the Minnesota Music Awards which go down in September. it was really cool. it was in the IDS building downtown and the program director, Steve Nelson, from the current was there too. basically, it was to get the current on board to sponsor this event which is in its 25th year. this is how it goes down.

but enough about that, i finally found a ripped season finale of the oc off of bearshare. yes! so now my sister and i are having an oc party at 4:12 on a monday afternoon.

this whole 21 idea was a bad idea for me. i officially opened my first tab tonight at Nomad World Pub in dinky town and of course put it on my credit card as well! so, not only am i spending money i don't have, i flat out shouldn't be spending money right now! i am scared for the real world, for it will kick my ass.

but looking past all of that i had a really good night tonight. after work, i met up with ryan and bryan and kate at Nomad's and had a few drinks. We saw the Murzik, some guy who sounded like the lead singer from coheed and cambria-but in a mellow out singer-songwriter version, and the vestals. all were really good! i enjoyed my adventure to unknown territory. but for god's sake this whole 21 is going to be the life of me.

so yeah, that was my night in a nut. now ryan and bryan are crashing at my place. p.s. ryan graduated from eau claire today. hopefully he passed spanish so he can go to law school at vermont in the fall :). and i am cooking a pizza now. i am so hungry. i should go work out. actually, i think i am going to get a membership at my highschool workout facitlity because it is new and cheap. go alumni!

also, anne graduates on the 12th. still in june. hehe. enjoy the weekend. i will talk to you all soon.

today was the second day in a row that i had to close for the country club. got home about 145 am. isnt that awesome. worked another lovely wedding reception, which makes me just sick. i think by the time i get around to mine i prolly will just be tired of them. i hope not annie! :)

ahh cute...so yes. i'm in a dilemma. i got offered the Universal Internship today but i am really enjoying my experience with Vamp so far, and i dont know if i want to put time into something that will come of nothing. granted, it looks good on a resume-but.

i was so glad that is finally warmed up today. it better not rain for the rest of the summer. i can't wait for summer and for annie to come home from school! yes, she is still in school and graduates from lawrence June 13.

i have a feeling once the summer picks up i will be spending all my money at the bars. the whole 21 novelty hasn't really faded-or kicked in for that matter-but i predict that no good can come from it. getting fat, losing money. what's better?

so, the first thing i thought about last night was how i missed the OC. call me what you will, but i love that show and it has only grown on me since i watched the whole first season on dvd over christmas break-thanks kris. but the end of season 2 is just depressing. i mean, who would have thought kirsten would go off the deep end? she was the stable one of everyone...and i am analyzing the OC. go me.

the sun finally came out some today. still unpacking my crap from school. as soon as i think i am done there is more stuff to go through and throw out. worked at the good old ICC tonight with mr bryan atchison. ryan stopped by for some entertainment. although it ended on a sour note.

i want everyone to keep my buddy shane in their prayers. he needs some support because he is going through some life changing events.

i start my first day at Vamp tomorrow. got a call today telling me that i will be helping out with Voltage fashion show down at First Ave next week. sounds kind of exciting. there are a bunch of bands playing including hometown faves: Olympic Hopefuls. if you got $8 to spare definetly check it out. it is for a good cause too!

i am wiped and am ready for bed. thanks to all who posted. hope everyone is doing well and is starting their summer off right.

if i have one more night of tossing and turning-can't get a good night's rest, wake up with a horrible back ache-i may just not go to bed at all. seriously. why can't i just get a good night's sleep? all i want is to not wake up sore and aching from sleeping in my bed which i have grown to love since i was a little one.

if this weather does not go away, i may have to cut my wrists-because it is that lousy and dreary out that i cannot handle it anymore. granted, it gives me an excuse to stay inside and write in this stupid blog, but i don't care anymore i want to go outside and enjoy my summer.

i guess i can now call myself a blogger. that's right, i jumped on the bandwagon. who would have thought i would copy others before me?

in all honesty this is just another lame excuse for me to sit on my computer and check my email every 5 minutes. i think i am starting to develop an obsession about it too. it is kind of scary.

just wrapped up another year of school and have one more to go. i had two internship interviews on monday and they went really well. i interviewed with Universal Music and Vamp Music Source, a booking and Promotion company in Uptown. looks like i will be working with Vamp-which i am totally excited about!

Libby just won her first game in state for Kennedy girls Lacrosse at Holy Angels. It was a close game, with a tie breaking goal with only 30 seconds left. pretty intense.

so i guess that is it for now. time for me to get back to unpacking and cleaning out all my crap.
